A CAR has been crushed in Dandenong today as a demonstration of tough new anti-hoon laws.
The white Holden Commodore belonged to a 22-year-old serial hoon driver from Hamilton.
He was nabbed twice for burnouts and once for high-speed and dangerous driving.

Assistant Commissioner Ken Lay says repeat hoon offenders will face their cars being pulverised as the Government gets tough with troublemakers on the roads. More than 40 will be crushing in the next few months.
Police Minister Bob Cameron said the man was considered a public danger on the road.
"As the car does not meet Victoria's resale safety standards and is owned outright by the driver, it was used by SES volunteers to practise their road rescue skills before being crushed," Mr Cameron said.
More than 40 cars are in line to be crushed in the next few months.
Under revamped laws, first-time hoon drivers will have their car impounded for seven days as opposed to two days.
And second-time hoon offenders will have their car immobilised or impounded for 28 days.
More than 11,300 cars have been impounded in the four years since anti-hoon legislation was introduced.
Almost half of the cars are Holdens, with St Albans the most common suburb.
Deputy Commissioner Ken Lay said cars that had an acceptable safety rating would be sold rather than crushed.
"If we permanently seize a vehicle that is not of a high safety standard, in that it doesn't have features such as ABS brakes and airbags, I cannot, in good conscience, send that vehicle back into the community," Mr Lay said.
"This is about getting unsafe vehicles off the road and working to a higher standard of road safety across the state, while also sending a strong message to people who choose to hoon on our roads."
Police already have the power to crush cars, but only in extreme cases.
The car of a repeat offender was crushed more than a year ago under anti-hoon laws, but it is about to become more commonplace.
Under the law, hoons' cars will be either confiscated and sold or crushed for third offences.
Cars set to be crushed will be stripped of parts, which will be sold, and the shell will be put in a compactor.
It is understood that under the new policy a vehicle would only be crushed if it is unsafe or deemed to have been illegally modified to a point where it is unsafe.
Speed limiters have also been considered.
Additional measured the Brumby Government have been in discussions about include:
- First time offenders having their vehicle impounded or immobilised for a week,
- Second time offenders having their vehicle impounded for up to three months or lose their car permanently for the most serious offences
- Third time offenders will forfeit their vehicle, which would be sold or crushed. Any proceeds of a sale would go to victims of crime.
Cars that are owned by third parties, such as a bank, will be sold to cover the debt with the remainder going to victims of road trauma.
It is understood the government is opposed to convicted hoons being able to buy back their cars if it is spared the compactor.
More than 10,000 cars in Victoria have been impounded under anti-hoon laws.
Under current laws, police can apply to the courts following second or third hoon offences to have a car immobilised for three months or forfeited permanently.
The impetus to toughen anti-hoon laws came after a horrific Mill Park crash that claimed five lives.
The State Government and Opposition both announced they would crush cars soon after the crash.
Hoon offences include excessive speeding, drag racing or dangerous driving.

Itâ??s about time the government did something to teach 'hoon drivers' a lesson. People these days continue to break the law on Victorian roads and get away with it, but this scheme will give them something to think about. It could happen to them! I don't understand people that go out make a total knob of themselves by speeding, reckless driving, even causing other drivers to die because of their stupidity, and clearly don't care about other drivers on the road. What are they trying to prove?

All this will do is make hoons go out and buy old cars that are more unsafe and unroadworthy, why would a hoon care if they lost a $500 dollar car. There needs to be alot more done than just crushing cars. Driver training is one thing, more legal venus such as skid pans and race tracks. I want to know why a drink driver, is exempt from being deemed a hoon, they are more dangerous on the roads than someone that performs a burnout. Yet people who continue to drink drive are let off with a slap on the wrist. All this is doing is covering the problem with a quick fix, but not fixing the real problem.
Comment 13 of 90 # Realist of Epping of Epping Posted at 12:15 PM Today
I agree with Mark Skaife. We need a tougher system to be put in place, so unreliable and unskilled drivers dont drive. Speeding is one thing, but you can also die for driving too slow and making the wrong decisions! By raising the speed limit and bringing in a tougher system, there will be less deaths on our roads.

We need to address the real issue and that's the breeding of bogans and morons in our communities. Selective breeding is the way to go and we will soon erase these idiots from the community. Afterall, there are numerous checks before people qualify for IVF, the same checks should apply for bogans and morons trying to breed naturally.

What would make this a special moment is for the owner of the car to be there and for someone to film his face and that of his parents. For they sure brought him up right....respect and obey the law. Good Job. Government could make a tv show and people would pay to press the button crushing the cars of hoons who have, or could have killed people while they drove around our streets. Who have put our family and friends at rish while they flouted the laws that rest of us obey.

Fair enough, crush the cars of idiots. How about the dangers we face from undercover Police? I Quite often I see dangerous/speeding activity by undercover police cars, changing across 3 lanes, no lights on, weaving through traffic etc... not even to pull someone over for breaking a road rule. One instance it was to pull over to a drive through cafe for a coffee on the side of the road just after the Burvale hotel. Also see them drag off from the left lane at the lights frequently, one of those which merges from 4 into 3 lanes. ie. Springvale Rd/Burwood Hwy. Some other things the Police appear take pride in doing. -Revving their car at the lights, starring at another driver to goad or incite them into a drag race. So they can fine them/raise revenue/meet a quota. What happens if they incite that drag race and then there is an accident!! T his is very dangerous! -Taligating within one to half a car length, very very frequent, for some kilometres trying to pressure the person into a mistake so they can fine them and raise some revenue/meet a quota. I see it every second day. What happens if they pressure/make that driver so nervous they have an accident!

Comment 33 of 90 # Sherree of Melbourne Posted at 12:46 PM Today
This is great but there should be more preventative measures/rules/regulations put in place prior to this. As Mark Skaife said in a tv special. We need to educate our drivers better, require more of them so then they 1) dont feel the desire to be wreckless 2) Know how to handle vehicles especially at higher speeds. Obtaining your license needs to be that you have to complete more requirements & you have to earn it, not a measley 120hrs. Like in Europe you have to have intense education, advance driving skills (in all conditions), parents forbidden from teaching children, driving etiquette etc. Preventative measures as well as consequences(for hoon behaviour) need to be implemented/regulated!

Number one, I blame tv. shows such as "top gear" and these idiots trying to copycat the antics of boguns on these type of shows. Number two,the so-called "hoons" are just complete show-offs,and I say that the tightening up of the laws is long over-due.I dont think that they realise they not only have to go without their mode of transport, but they cop a towing charge of anywhere beteewn $300.00 to $500.00,plus the storage fee,let alone the grief of loved ones that they have either killed or injured. A car is a lethal weapon in the wrong hands,so the authorities should look at them as if they have a fire-arm in their possession, and take the appropiate action...!!!

Coming from a family where my father and a sister were both in the police force and hearing the stories they told over the dinner table, believe me there are just as many hoons and dickheads in the police. I personally have witnessed dozens of indescretions by members of the police over thirty plus years of driving. Most long term drivers would have also. I suppose all you 'do-gooders' have never ever done anything wrong whilst driving a car. Never had a drink and gotten behind the wheel, never sped up to beat a light, never crept through a stop sign because you knew no-one was around or never received a fine for being a couple of km's over the limit. I honestly think the majority of you have very short memories. The fact is any of the above illegal matters would be be far worse than 'spinning the wheels' and yet this 'crime' is considered far worse than physically attacking someone with a broken bottle or a knife. Time to concentrate on real crime, sure they are idiots, so impound the car for 2 years, charge them for storage, increase the fine to $5000 or so and remove their licence for 2 years. Crushing a car is a absolute joke and a waste of resources.
